5Wonderful Tool!  Apr 28, 2009 By CA reader
I bought "The Stick" as an impulse buy at a sporting goods store to massage the muscles in my legs. Plastic rings roll independently over a stiff pole making it a very hard surface. I had to use care to avoid coming close to my shins or any other bony areas. It's not a very pleasant-feeling tool and the little plastic rings rattle as you run up and down your muscles. It feels like rolling a metal pipe up and down your legs (although it's plastic).

I decided to check out Amazon - which I should have done before buying anything to begin with -and discovered the 22" Tiger Tail Rolling foam massager and I prefer it, hands down. It's pretty much a very hard, foam rolling pin and feels like it gets deeper into my muscles than the plastic rings of The Stick which ride without resistance over the surface of my skin. The foam has just enough give to prevent bruising if I inadvertently run into a bone. This means I'm able to massage a greater surface area with less caution and my muscles feel much better after using the Tiger Tail over The Stick. I feel like I can use the Tiger Tail with much greater pressure and work more deeply than with The Stick.

The only downside is the Tiger Tail is 22 3/8" long with a 14" rolling foam work surface whereas The Stick is 24" long with a 16 1/2" work surface. This makes working on the back or other areas where length is a plus easier with The Stick. (Diameter is 4.5" for the Tiger Tail, 3.5" for The Stick) But for me, the Tiger Tail makes my muscles feel deeply well-kneaded and vibrant whereas The Stick makes them almost feel injured and my skin sensitive.

Oh - and The Tiger Tail is much cheaper than The Stick. That's just hard to figure out.

5So Happy I Read the Reviews!  Apr 09, 2010 By G. Duffy "Converted!"
I am so happy I read the reviews on "The Stick" before I purchased it. One reviewer for The Stick said it was hard plastic and couldn't roll near the bones and then after the fact had found the Tiger Tail at a sporting goods store. I clicked over to the Tiger Tail and started reading the reviews immediately and decided to purchase. I started getting shin splints from running and this little gadget is amazing! I can roll right over my ankle and shins (even over the shin bone) and not have any pain or discomfort because of the foam that is wrapped around the stick. This has really helped alleviate my pain and it feels great...relieves the tension and any little knots. I was really worried I might have to stop running due to my shin splints but now I roll my ankles and shins before and after each run...it has made a tremendous difference. It's also been great on other areas I have tried (forearms, quads, etc). It easily rolls over your limbs and the rubber handles give you a nice grip. Thrilled to have found it!

5Doctor Recommended  Mar 11, 2008 By Dr. Jeff Hill, DPT, MA, CSCS
I was recently introduced to the Tiger Tail Rolling Massager and was
very impressed with the design, quality and performance. As a doctor of
physical therapy, I am always looking for home products for my patients
that are easy to use and that supplement the treatment I give in the
clinic. The Tiger Tail is a perfect tool for self soft tissue
mobilization. I highly recommend the Tiger Tail to my patients as an
adjunct to therapy.* --Dr. Jeff Hill, DPT, MA, CSCS

4It's A Rolling Pin  Sep 08, 2009 By A. D. Lum
There is nothing "wrong" with this product. Just know that it is not a wonderstick - just a simple massage tool (somehow I was expecting it to work wonders). It is a foam rubber coated cylinder that revolves around a shaft with a rubber handle on either end. My only complaint is that whatever mechanism is used for the rolling could be a little smoother. Maybe inexpensive bearings would do the trick.

Different people will have different sensations when this tool is used to knead their muscles. Some like to have their thighs "rolled", while I prefer my calves and back. Some people will feel ticklish.

If you use a thick dowel rod to experiment, this tool will probably feel exactly the same but is easier to grip.
