Cold weather issues Nov 09, 2009
By Joan Wotkowicz
"beetlejuice"
I purchased a Suunto MC-2 compass to use in finding and marking my property boundaries. I needed more accuracy than my inexpensive field compass, so I wanted a larger bezel, foldout cover with sighting line, and mirror.
Luckily, I took my cheap compass with me when I went into the woods, because the needle on the Suunto MC-2 was "sticky". Whenever I turned the compass to try and line up the north marker, it hung up. No amount of leveling or jiggling seemed to make it move freely. There were no metal objects interfering.
Later, indoors, the needle action was fine. On a hunch that temperature was the issue, I put the compass in the refrigerator for a few minutes. Sure enough, when I took it out, the needle was sticky again.
I can't find any data on the temperature range of this compass, but I'm going to return it. The temperature outside was over 40F when the needle was sticking. I definitely need better cold weather performance than that!

Search and Rescue Apr 11, 2011
By C. Phillips This compass came highly recommended and I found it to be exactly what I was looking for. I used it in navigation courses in preparation to be part of a Search and Rescue team. I am very pleased with the product and have recommended it to others.

Very happy with the Suunto MC2 ... Sep 08, 2009
By Mark Fitzgerald I know someone who has this compass and he has been using it for some time now. He said I couldn't go wrong by picking up the Suunto MC2. I've found it to be all I need and more. I've been very happy with the Suunto MC2 Compass. (I'm in Canada)
General Info - The compass needle is painted in two colors. Assuming that the compass is held flat, the red end points to north, and the white end to south. An interesting detail is that there are northern- and southern-hemisphere compasses. This has to do with the fact that the magnetic field lines, to which a compass needle aligns, point into the earth at the north and south magnetic poles. In the northern hemisphere the north end of the needle is pulled downwards, and the south end is counterweighted to balance the needle. When you use a northern hemisphere compass in, say, Australia, the south end of the magnet is pulled downwards by the magnetic field, and is also heavier than the north end - resulting in a needle that catches and drags on the bottom of the compass housing when the compass is held horizontal.
(Note - Works anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere.)
