Check model/pricing at REI before ordering Oct 12, 2008

"shopping mystery"
Excellent headlamp..very satisfied with performance. Fantastic for lighting up the night in a lightweight wearable headlamp.
However, I'm very dissappointed in not comparison shopping around enough. I thought Amazon would always have the best deal. This headlamp is not the newest model and is on clearance at REI for 10$ less than I paid.
I will definitely shop around more next time, since the newer model is updated with better bulbs. Considering how bright this headlamp is, the new improved version must be a stunner.

impressed by the customer service Dec 29, 2009
By MW I received this product as a gift 2 years ago. I love it! It works great - everything I need. Unfortunately, I pulled it out of my bag on a camping trip this summer and the plastic bracket holding the lamp to the band was broken. I was devastated, the warranty had run out. I recently decided to contact customer service. Despite the busy holiday season, they got back to me right away and are sending me a new bracket free of charge. Thank you Black Diamond! In a world where customer service seems to disappearing, you contradict the norm and provide fantastic service!

Won't take it off. Feb 07, 2010
By Tillie Such a great thing. Owner of this Christmas present uses it for everything. Doing chores at night, reading in the car, searching under furniture, auto repair. The best.

OK at maybe 1/2 the price, has major issues Oct 12, 2010
By EDW I already own a Tikka XP, which is a really nicely made headlamp which I would recommend to anyone. This one however leaves a lot to be desired. The main problem with it is it isn't waterproof at all. The back latch hole opens right into the battery compartment, and there is a hole in the battery compartment where you can clearly see the circuit board. I definitely wouldn't use it hiking or in any application where it might get wet as it could be easily ruined, salt water in particular would kill this thing quickly.
A second issue with it is it is poorly engineered and much more cheaply made than the XP.
Third, the control is kind of strange, you can press the button down hard and hear it click which turns it on and off, or you can press it half way and have it change brightness levels for the LED, from bright to dim to dimmest to blinking to bright again. Turning it off and then on again selects the other LED. I downloaded the owner's manual for it before I bought it and it wasn't clear that this is how it functions. I don't like having to cycle between the LEDs by turning it on and off as it's just too cumbersome. And who needs an obnoxious blinking mode ever, particularly with the flood LEDs?
Fourth, the battery drain for the various modes doesn't make much sense - the main LED is more efficient, and on the lowest brightness setting it is brighter but will actually go longer than the three flood LEDs on the lowest brightness setting, which makes no sense.
Fifth, the three flood LEDs have too much of a bright spot in the center, and are really too bright for reading even on the lowest setting.
Sixth, there is some light leakage that glares onto my glasses when it is aimed at the ground. My XP has a bit of plastic shielding the downward direction.
I modified mine almost immediately by disassembling it and unsoldering the two outer LEDs. This made the lowest brightness setting much lower, though still not really low enough. Current draw now is 235 mA / 115 mA / 56 mA for high / medium / low of the main LED, and 36 mA / 18 mA / 9 mA for high / medium / low of the remaining center flood LED, which suits me much better. I may take a file to the flood led to make it less of a spot. Even this single LED set on its lowest setting is really too bright when reading in bed with another person trying to sleep.
It's an OK headlamp, but I'm going to start treating my XP better so it will last and so I can use it more outside, and I'll use this one strictly inside when doing hobby work, painting, etc. For 1/2 price it would maybe be worth it.

Very impressive! Jan 19, 2010
By E. Svidgal Just got to try out the new Black Diamond 1W spot-headlight and so far I am totally satisfied, especially for my purposes, which is mostly jogging, biking or skiing after hours... Does not look waterproof and probably is not, but I don't shower with it... The light output, just like everybody else is lamenting, is truly amazing for a little AAA-headlamp, it's as if you had a big Maglite strapped to your forehead.
Definitely worth the price!
