5Quicker than ATC  Mar 30, 2010 By Bryan A. Cook
Had a chance to use the grigri this last weekend. Much easier to take up a lot of slack quickly when top-roping. Was a 5.9ish route, so the others moved up quickly. With the ATC, it takes some time to pull all the rope through and keep up. Grigri is much quicker in that regard.

As far as lowering goes, I used the lever arm as well as my brake hand to ensure the climber wasn't lowered too quickly. I have no problem using grigri or ATC, but agree that new climbers should definitely learn on the ATC first.

5Petzl - Grigri  Mar 04, 2011 By jaybcram
This was everything I had read about and expected. Well constructed and sturdy. I had read many reviews and articles about the Grigri and watched videos on them and knew what to expect. I am pleased with my purchase.

5Multi use  Feb 24, 2011 By BJ72
I have used the GriGri for everything from climbing, emergency repairs on a vessel at sea to launching Jetski's when the crane on the vessel I captain broke in the middle of a charter. An awesome piece of safety equipment.

4A must have for self belay  Mar 14, 2010 By J. Wu
You need to have this if no one can belay you at the wall. It is also good for belaying other climber but you cannot give rope too fast otherwise it will lock. It is hard for me to control the speed smoothly when you release the lever to let down climber. My buddy once thought I almost dropped him just because I pulled down the lever a little bit too much and friction sudden dropped a lot.

It is kinda heavy and I still think there is room for weight reduction.
